Anyone else want to join this trek? Message from Judith Simpson - ex trekker from Trek 296 April 2007:We would like to be at Isurava for the anniversary (of the battle of Isurava) service. We would also like to spend 2 nights in Efogi and intend to complete the trek in 8 days. We would like to invite others to contact either myself or Jane about the trek if they are thinking of joining us. Since this is a
'fund raising' trek we'd like the chance to talk to as many people as possible so they join us, or perhaps sponsor us). We would also like to encourage others to stay on and enjoy the hospitality of the KOKODA people and to welcome home the winner of the KOKODA CHALLENGE Race in 2008 and soak up some of the atmosphere surrounding the yearly event. Anyone who would like to contact Judith, please email: Judith.Simpson@integral.com.au
Judith SimpsonMessage from Jane Boswell - ex trekker from Trek 296 April 2007:: The personal objectives of people who walk this track vary wildly from person to person, some do it for the physical challenge, others to specifically commemorate the memory of those brave young Australians who seved their country selflessly there during The war years, while others walk this famous track to experience the incredible bio diversity and pristine nature of this unique environment. The
Walk for Kokoda will still embrace, respect and cater to the individual goals and aspirations people have of such an experience, but, just as importantly, our group will at the same time be making a real contribution to the local community through sponsored participation in the walk.
After walking the track in 2007 and returning later on that year with a friend from my trekking group to visit the locals, who so freely and openly befriended us on our journey, we were both alarmed and saddened by the clear lack of modern essential facilities available in the local communities compared to the medical and educational facilities we usually enjoy. For example, the local Elementary School cannot afford even minimal equipment such as tables and chairs for the children to sit at. We felt this provided an obvious opportunity to assist in a practical way through fundraising.
The selfless assistance the local Papuans, affectionately named Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, gave to injured Australian Digers along the track during WWII is now the stuff of legend. Many of the soldiers they helped and tended acknowledge that without that assistance from those Samaritans they would never have made it back to their loved ones in Australia, now
you have a chance to give something back to these people and to assist those locals as they did so freely and compassionately in our time of need.
Each person who joins this trek will have to find sponsorship of $500.00. This $500.00 will go directly to a local school to purchase much needed generators which the school has identified as necessary to provide power to run computers and audio visual equipment to be used in the education of the local children in an effort to afford them the life and educational skills needed to assure the future well being of these remote communities through the nurturing of both traditional and modern life skills in the young.
The whole
Walk for Kokoda group will visit the primary school at the conclusion of the walk and present the school with the sponsorship gift, take a tour of the school and meet some of the students whose lives you will be enriching with your gift.
So if you are looking for a life changing challenge and would like to give some life changing assistance to those in need at the same time, join our group and help make a difference to them, and to you !

Brendan Buka is also the record holder in the opposite direction set in 2007 in a time of 17 hours 20 minutes:Update 25th March: Brendan Buka walked in today from a trek and is pretty confident he will win again in 2008. He seems to think there is an international competitor out there just waiting to try and take it away from him before he makes it 3 in a row! Nothing like confidence, but how about it, anyone think they can beat Brendan? He specially sends out an invitation to the four team members who won the Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge, the Nike Team.

Yes I will be on the track for my 70th birthday which is the 27th September just what I wanted thanks.
Now Gail I have a big ask for you besides myself it will also certainly assist others passing through Brisbane who maybe contemplating the same trek 435 is it possible to bring it forward one day starting on the 26th ?
The reason for this is flights by bringing it one day forward it would work in very well with Airlines PNG flights, see below, if I was to use Qantas their flights arrive at 1pm before clearing customs etc which would be next to useless for you wanting to start a trek that day where Airlines PNG arrive at 10.40am a more suitable time I would think.
I could come a day earlier with Qantas and leave a day later also with Qantas but this would be an extra expense not only with Qantas but hotels as well. Airlines PNG with the trek starting on the 27th would add possibly two hotel nights each end.
By starting one day earlier trek 435 would both ends work in very nicely with Airlines PNG flights with a one night hotel stop on the way home, I am sure that others taking this trek passing through Brisbane would greatly appreciate this also.

ANZAC at ISURAVA-Kokoda to Owers' Cnr
Date: 23 April 2009 - 1 May 2009
ANZAC at ISURAVA is designed so that you can fly into Kokoda and overnight as out guests. The following day you walk up to Isurava Monument area and overnight so you are there in readiness for the service which is held at dawn by the Australian High Commission. Following the service you continue walking to Owers' Corner and arrive there on the 1st May when our transport will collect you and drive you back to your respective hotels - Trek 491:List of Trekkers:1. Conan Wheatcroft
Additional Message:To arrive and walk up to Isurava Monument area on the 24th is a big ask for the average person. We had a group walk in 2008 who left on the 24th and arrived at Isurava Monument around 8pm that night.
This trek is designed so that you can look around on the 23rd and be ready to get up early on the 24th around 6am and commence your walk without worrying about a delayed flight into Kokoda. The flight this year got away around 7:30 and arrived in Kokoda at 8am. Two years ago one girl could not make it and missed the service. We feel commencing your trek on the 23rd April 2009 is a much safer option to the pressure of walking on the 24th if your aim is to reach Isurava for the service.

Who is Soc Kienzle? As a child, Soc explored the jungle with the "fuzzy wuzzies" and their families, searching for war relics on the battle sites his father would describe. Much of what is and was in the Kokoda Museum was found by him, including the Japanese Mountain Gun now located next to the Japanese memorial on the Kokoda plateau.
At the age of 13, Soc set the record for a non-national "man" when he crossed the Trail, from MacDonald's Corner to Kokoda in 30 hours including 6 hours sleep at Kagi. Over the ensuing years he traversed different parts of the track helping to drive the first cattle to native blocks and on aircraft search and rescue missions. He knows the
'True War Trail', much of which is no longer being used, better than anyone.
Soc's love of Kokoda did not begin with reading a book although he has read every one that has been written about the Campaign! His passion for Kokoda and its people is in his blood and his desire to maintain the integrity of the Trail is borne for this reason and out of deep respect for his father, the Papuans and the diggers.
Traversing the Trail with Soc entertaining you with stories of the war, and many other tales only he can tell, is an experience you will never forget and one which cannot be matched.
His rapport with the nationals as he talks and jokes with them in Motu will fascinate and amaze you and give you an insight into the local people, their humour and their culture that again, cannot be matched.
